Spot Clean Method To Remove Hard Stains From Clothes

The industrial laundry process is bound to encounter some difficult-to-clean stains originating from the spill of tea, coffee, blood, etc. In this case, spot cleaning is the perfect method to help remove dirty marks and ensure the quality of the fabrics.

The reasons why spot cleaning is the perfect solution for tough stains

Spot cleaning is a washing method that utilizes specialized chemicals to handle tough spots derived from the spill of tea, coffee, bloodstains, etc. The targets of the spot cleaning method include:

  • Tea, coffee, juice, and alcoholic beverages often contain tannins, a natural colourant found in the bark of trees and plants. Stain spots created by tannic acid are hard to wash and leave yellow pigments if not handled properly.

  • Haemoglobin in the blood has the effect of causing the blood to clot when exposed to air, helping to heal wounds faster and prevent blood loss. However, this characteristic also makes it easier for blood to tightly stick to the fabric, making it difficult to be eliminated. Besides, foods containing protein or human sweat also have the same effect and can be taken care of with the same cleaning chemicals.

Dried blood stains

  • Oil stains are derived from cooking oil, lard, butter, skin creams, or hair glue. This type of stain is usually colourless and easy to see when it first adheres to the fabrics' surfaces. However, after a certain period, the contaminated spot will show black stains on white fabric or grey ones on coloured fabrics.

Identify the source of the stain

The step to determine the type of stain on the fabric is extremely necessary to provide the right solution and chemical selection for maximum effectiveness.

  • Stains caused by blood or food can be removed by soaking in biological laundry detergent containing enzymes. Among them, mixtures of proteases are the most popular because this type of solution can break down the protein structure, making it easily soluble in water. Not only that, fats in food can be broken down by Lipase, and Amylases have the same effect on starch.
  • For stains caused by coffee, tea, or red wine, bleach-containing hydrogen peroxide or chlorine is the most reasonable choice. These substances can disrupt the colour structure of drinks, erasing the existence of stains. However, one thing to note is that hydrogen peroxide does not work effectively if the water temperature drops below 40 degrees Celsius.
  • Using chemicals with active surfactants is the optimal choice for grease stains. The molecular structure of this substance allows water and grease stains to be attracted to one end (hydrophilic end) and repels water at the other end (hydrophobic tail), causing dirt to be separated from the cloth's surface and suspended in water. Then, the operation of the washing machine can thoroughly remove the stain from the fabric surfaces.
  • Dirt stains can benefit from softening solutions. These solutions remove calcium and magnesium ions, breaking the bond between the dirt stain and the fabric surface.

Classification of laundry fabrics

The classification of fabrics before washing is based on material, colour, and degree of soiling. This stage is crucial to a great extent because:

  • Avoid damaging the fabric during cleaning.
  • Spread cross stains during general washing.
  • Each stain type requires disparate specialized washing chemicals.

Notes on the method of spot cleaning

To properly wash away tea, coffee, blood, or other difficult-to-remove stains, note:

  • Never mix dry solvents with water, or wet solvents with other chemical solutions.
  • Using chemicals with a high dilution can make stain removal results slower but help protect fabrics more effectively.
  • Do not let the chemical solution contact the stain for more than 10 minutes. Otherwise, the soaking solution and dirt can be absorbed back into the fabric, causing itching and skin irritation for the user.
  • Rinse thoroughly before switching from one type of laundry chemical to another. The reaction between different detergents is very unpredictable.
