Types of cotton

Based on its constituents, cotton is classified into three primary types:

  • The first is made of 100 percent cotton and effectively absorbs sweat. It is good for sunny days in Vietnam.
  • Cotton 65/35 (CVC) has superior tensile strength, elasticity, and sweat absorption.
  • Tixi (Cotton 35/65), which is softer than most and holds up well, is frequently employed in the production of clothing and T-shirts.

Methods of identifying cotton fabric

The senses method

Standard cotton is very easy to fold and has a soft texture, as observed with the eye. However, mixed cotton does not result in wrinkles or folds when crumpled, resulting in a beautiful sheen and exceptional durability.

Thermodynamic method

In addition to the sense method, cotton can also be identified using thermodynamics. If burning small cotton results in pink flames, gray smoke, and no plastic residue, the fabric is made entirely of cotton. In contrast, when cotton blends are burned, they will smell like plastic and clump. The stronger the plastic smell, the higher the polyethylene ratio.

Water permeability of cotton

Almost the entire surface of a fabric made of 100 percent cotton has a high water permeability rate. However, if the material is a blend of cotton and polypropylene, the water permeability is slow, and the degree of spreading is not uniform.

The cotton washing methods

Cotton, due to its unique composition, is a highly durable fabric that can be machine-washed with different laundry chemicals. Additionally, detergent is used on this fabric. However, before washing, you must carefully read the user manuals and select safe laundry chemicals that won't irritate your skin.

  • Use warm water and normal washing machine settings.
  • Dry on the lowest heat setting after washing.
  • Use a steam iron or iron on the hottest setting to prevent wrinkles after washing. Spray a thin layer of glue on the neck and sleeve areas to maintain the shape.

Notes when washing cotton

  • Sort fabrics before washing. Do not wash white fabrics with other colors.
  • Do not wash clothes in hot water because cotton is very sensitive to heat. They will stretch and reduce the life of the fabric.
  • Do not use bleach too much to avoid lint.

How do you maintain cotton fabric?

Sorting

This is an essential step that is frequently overlooked during the washing process. Sorting clothes before washing them will prevent their colors from fading and enhance their lifespan.

Using suitable laundry chemicals

Cotton is a highly durable fabric; however, using the wrong laundry detergent will shorten its lifespan. Using an excessive amount of detergent will adversely affect the quality and color, as well as irritate the skin.

Do not wash in hot water

The ideal washing temperature for cotton is below 40 degrees. Because water that is too hot can stretch the fabric and cause it to lose its original form.

Dry in a cool place, avoid strong sunlight

Drying clothes in direct sunlight is always hazardous to their durability. Particularly with organic cotton, the action is identical to "destroying" clothing. Leave the reverse side intact during drying to preserve the prints, materials, and colors of the garments.

Store in a cool place

Due to its rapid permeability, cotton clothing must be stored in a cool environment, away from humid conditions that can cause mold growth or stain fabrics.
