Industrial Laundry Wastewater Treatment System

Industrial laundry wastewater with higher pH and toxic contaminants has terribly negative impacts on the environment and human wellness. Therefore, It is extremely important to have a qualified industrial wastewater treatment system.

Wastewater treatment system

A wastewater treatment system involves a collection of equipment, single process technology and they are connected together. At the same time, there is a combination of some laundry chemicals, solvents to completely address the issue of wastewater from hospitals, factories and residential areas…

It depends on business sizes, features and characteristics of wastewater to build different types of wastewater treatment systems. However, the final goal is still to treat and eliminate contaminants, pathogens and toxic chemicals that are harmful to humans and the environment.

Types of effective wastewater treatment methods

  • Sedimentation tank

  • Chemical precipitation

  • Aerobic biotechnology

  • Air flotation technology

  • Coagulation and flocculation technology

  • Neutralization

Causes and effects of laundry wastewater

Laundry industry has a high demand for daily consumption and disposal of water. At the same time, it also uses different kinds of cleaning chemicals and solvent to eliminate stains. Therefore, industrial laundry wastewater often contains various kinds of stains, oils, solids, colors…

Besides, pathogens from hospitals or biopersistence from washing detergents might have great threats to the well-being of people and the environment. So, it is important for businesses to get rid of all harmful substances in wastewater before disposing of the natural environment.

Negative effects of industrial laundry wastewater on the environment.

  • It is likely to harm or even kill aquatic species if pH > 9.

  • Neutral salts increase the dissolved solids, which will be harmful to aquatic species due to the increase in osmotic pressure, affecting metabolic processes in organism cells.

  • Starch in wastewater increases BOD and COD content, reduces dissolved oxygen in water, which is harmful to aquatic life.

  • Polluting, coloring and causing unpleasant scent to the water resources, leading to soil pollution and negatively affecting groundwater.

The impacts of the laundry industrial wastewater

The process of industrial wastewater treatment

The process of industrial wastewater treatment is divided into different steps. Each step is equivalent to different equipment and technology. This aims at eliminating toxic substances, debris, pathogens to make sure the treated water does not threaten the environment and meet the principles of the Ministry of natural resources and environment.

Pre-treatment

Detaching waste, reducing heat for wastewater, removing sludge through coarse iron bars to block garbage, regulating tanks to control temperature, reducing water flow and pollution concentration of wastewater.

Chemical treatment

For the purpose of stabilizing the pH in waste, removing heavy metals, and dissolved organic substances. Neutralization treatment is implemented through coagulation, physico-chemical deposition to treat industrial laundry wastewater.

Biological treatment

Biological method of aeration tank with suspended sludge layer or aerobic tank with attached sludge with suitable concentration of organic matter is used to treat BOD and chemical color of wastewater.

Pre-disposal

This stage thoroughly treats wastewater to grade A according to the National standard for industrial wastewater treatment of the Ministry of Environment. At this stage, the method applied is the rapid filtration of gravity and pressure. Besides, repeating the method of coagulation and flocculation combined with a method of high oxidation, Ozone and adjusting the pH to neutral.

Sludge treatment

Sludge is separated from water and accumulated in storage tanks. Sludge is thickened by a compressor and undergoes an additional sludge treatment by solid treatment methods.

Collection tank

Wastewater after the laundry process is stored in collection tanks. Here, the water after removing garbage will be led to regulating-temperature tanks.

Conditioning tank

The conditioning tank has the effect of stabilizing the flow and characteristics of wastewater. The conditioning tank is usually designed with a system of blowers and agitators to disturb the waste stream, pre-oxidize organic substances and avoid the generation of anaerobic bacteria that decompose causing bad odors. After the wastewater is stabilized, it will be pumped through the coagulation and flocculation tank.

The flocculation tank

A flocculation is required because wastewater contains too much suspended solids. Here, wastewater will be mixed with coagulant chemicals and flocculation aids. Suspended compounds in wastewater will clump together to form particles that are larger and easier to settle.

The wastewater will first enter the mixing compartment. After that, coagulant chemicals and pH adjustment chemicals are added to support the coagulation process to occur. The fast stirring motor will mix the chemicals into the wastewater.

Wastewater continues to be directed to the flocculation compartment. Flocculation aid (polymer) is added to improve flocculation efficiency. Wastewater containing floc is led to a sedimentation tank to remove floc.

Sedimentation tank

A sedimentation tank allows suspended particles to settle out of water. A layer of accumulated solids forms at the bottom of the tank and is periodically removed.

Intermediate tank

The role of an intermediate tank is to store water behind the sedimentation tank and pump it to the pressure filtration system to remove solids.

Pressure filter tank

The pressure filter tank is designed with layers of filter materials such as: quartz sand, activated carbon ... to retain residual particles during the treatment process. Water continues to lead to the disinfection tank to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms.

Disinfection tank

In the disinfection tank, chlorine is added according to the appropriate dose and concentration to treat harmful bacteria in the water. The treated water must meet QCVN 40:2011/BTNMT standards.

Sludge storage tank

Excess and overflow water is returned to the conditioning tank for further treatment. The sludge in the storage tank will be collected and treated according to regulations.
